Kauai High School Gym
Built in 1939, Kauai High’s gymnasium is the oldest high school gym on the island. Kapaa High School’s and Waimea High School’s gymnasiums were built a decade later, as reported by The Garden Island. The initial conception for the new gym began in 2011 by John Hara & Associates, Inc., which served as the Architect of Record. Shioi Construction, Inc. was contracted and began work on the $21-million project on March 8, 2021. The project was completed on September 1, 2023.
The new gym seats approximately 1,600 spectators and includes a designated wrestling/cheerleading room, four team locker rooms, team rooms, athletic training room and office, lobby, ticket office, and concession room. The second floor houses the athletic director's office, complete with shower, conference, and storage rooms, accessible by two stairways and an elevator.
Unique as it is, this project involved at least 32 subcontractors and 38 vendors and suppliers. Shioi Construction self-performed all structural excavation and backfill, concrete, rough and finish carpentry, metal roofing, millwork, and ornamental railings, and guardrails. CPS performed drywall, DEFS, and acoustical ceilings.
